Roger Washburn Dear Roger: We, the students and teachers, at the School for the Blind would like to thank you and your team for coming to our school to give us hands-on experience with Speed Stacks. It was exciting to see the enthusiasm build as your team members assisted our visually impaired and blind students in learning the techniques of stacking. Without hesitation your team jumped right in teaching and assisting our students learn the art of stacking. Your kids were amazing the way they adapted and worked with students with various disabilities from bright blind students to those with multiple disabilities and cognitive impairments. While watching I saw one of your kids teach by having the visually impaired student put his hands on top to feel what to do, and another gently hold and direct the hands of a student as each cup was picked up. Your kids are great! You have some wonderful team members in your office who came with you. One of your team members assisted one of our boys who is affected by CP on the right side of his body making it impossible for him to grasp a cup. It was awesome to watch her help this student use both hands and adapt for his blindness as well. His face glowed as he began to understand what he was doing. I was so glad to see someone who knew how to adapt for special disabilities. The excitement about stacking continued even when the hands-on sessions were finished. After you left many of our students and staff were inquiring about having stacking cups to be able to practice. Some comments expressed by our students were: "I finally found something I can do!", "This was fun!", and "Can I buy my own set?". Some of our staff commented on how excited our students were and how well your kids worked with our special and diverse population. The experience was very positive for the students and staff. As educators we see positive aspects of having our students do stacking. Our Occupational Therapist sees value in doing stacking, because it works on cross-laterality with which many of our students have difficulty. As an academic and PE teacher I see great worth doing stacking. The process used when stacking cups assists our students with directionality, organization, coordinating both hands, focus, as well as giving them a sense of accomplishment. We have found that sport stacking is a great reward and motivator. We have one or more sets of stacking cups in a number of the classrooms and the teachers are letting the students use them when they have completed their work and have a little time before the next class starts. Thank you again for such a wonderful, enjoyable time experiencing the excitement that comes with Speed Stacks. Sincerely, Jan Megarry,
CSDB PE Teacher |
