Eleven-year-old Ashlee Ginn knows firsthand what it’s like to compete in the World Sport Stacking Championships. She agreed to write a journal to document her tournament experiences and her adventures on the Speed Stacks Demo Team. Hi, everyone... My name is Ashlee Ginn and I am 11 years old and in the 6th grade at The Classical Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. |

| How I became a stacker... | ||||||||||||||
I was first introduced to cup stacking (that’s what it was called in the beginning) by my PE teacher, Mrs. Bissell, in 1 st grade. In 2nd grade, my parents bought me my first set of cups and I joined the after-school, cup stacking club. I loved learning the routines and trying to improve my time. I was excited when the leaders told us that the Regional Cup Stacking Championship Tournament was going to be held right here in our city at the United States Air Force Academy. I practiced even more so that I could compete in the tournament in the spring of 2002. Since this was my first cup stacking tournament, I just went to have fun and experience what a tournament was like. "When they announced my team placed fourth in the 3-6-3 Relay, I couldn’t believe my ears! I was so excited I wanted to hug my cups!" So much has changed since then... Now, I have a StackMat that has helped me improve my time immensely. In fact, my cups move so fast, my hands can’t keep up! Even the name has changed from “cup stacking” to “sport stacking” to better reflect the competitiveness of this activity. Also, the sport has spread to countries outside of North America. |

| Traveling as a member of the Demonstration Team... | ||||||||||||||
I went to my first WORLD Sport Stacking Tournament in the spring of 2005 at the Denver Coliseum. Although I didn’t win anything, I had a TON of fun. I had the privilege of meeting Emily Fox, world record holder, and I got to see my friend, Nate Florea, win the tournament. I had a cool time talking with kids from other countries, too. It was all very exciting! If you are a sport stacker and haven’t been to a tournament yet, I encourage you to go. Next month, I will travel to Tennessee to demonstrate sport stacking to PE teachers at a state-wide conference. I’ll tell you all about it when I return! Until next time….Stack Fast!!! |
