First Guinness World Record™ set in sport stacking. . .

Sport stacking took over Times Square in New York City on August 26th, 2004 where Emily Fox set the first ever recognized Guinness World Record in sport stacking.  She completed the Cycle stack in 8.42 seconds at this event. Shortly thereafter her WSSA Cycle Stack world record of 7.43 seconds set previously was accepted as the current official Guinness World Record and is featured on page 46 of the 2006 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Guinness World Record is official
The event culminated in the attempt for the Guinness World Record™ officiated by Roger Washburn, chairman of the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) and observed by Guinness representatives.

Adhering to WSSA rules, Emily Fox, Brennan Fox and Alex Rivas (three of the world’s fastest stackers), each had three tries to set the first Guinness World Record™.

Alex went first and his best time out of three was 8.79 seconds. Brennan went second, scratching on his first two attempts; and his third and fastest time of the day was 16.95 seconds. Emily anchored the event, and on her first try, she hit 8.90 seconds. She scratched on her second attempt, and then with the pressure on, she hit 8.42 seconds on her third and final try.

“The pressure was really intense,” Emily said. “I’m so glad I was able to come through with a clean and fast run on my last try.”

Emily is the current WSSA world record holder for the Cycle stack with a time of 7.43 seconds (set at a WSSA-sanctioned sport stacking tournament in 2002). Though the 16-year-old was hoping to break 8 seconds in Times Square, she said she’s relieved and happy to be the one to set the Guinness benchmark. “It’s truly an honor to set a Guinness World Record™ and so fun to be part of such a big event right here in New York City.”

Speed Stacks in the center of media event

The record-setting attempt was all part of a large media event, sponsored by Lay’s Stax, a new stackable potato crisp recently launched by Frito-Lay. (read more about Lay's Stax and Speed Stacks)

The New York City stacking extravaganza featured eight members of the Speed Stacks Demonstration Team who traveled from Colorado to take part. In addition to Emily, the Speed Stacks team included her brothers Brennan and Kit , Jenny Vieira, Kylie Metz, Alex Rivas, Audrey Klingenmeier and Joel Goers.

Caroline Rhea hosts media event
The media event was co-hosted by TV personality Caroline Rhea and Speed Stacks President Bob Fox. A huge crowd of spectators and media gathered in front of a stage assembled in the heart of Times Square to see the stacking action. Speed Stacks team members performed two choreographed routines to music and did a demonstration of timed individual and team relays.
