  "Excellent Opportunity" - January, 2006

"Working in Special Education, I need various activities available to my students to promote different types of learning, and to offer fun incentives to reward hard work and good attitudes. Finding these activities can be a challenge, until recently.

A news station in Minneapolis ran a story on Minnesota Golden Gopher basketball player Emily Fox. The story was not about her basketball skills, but about her sport stacking skills. After a little research about this interesting sport I thought this might be a perfect activity for my students. After some experimenting with some students and sets of Speed Stacks from our Phy. Ed. teacher, I knew this was the perfect activity for my students.

Stacking has grown in popularity in our school. Not only are my students working on the various skills learned from stacking, so are others outside of my Special Education program. We are in the process of creating an after school program that will involvee homework time and stacking time.

Our current school record in the 3-6-3 is 4.90 seconds set by an extremely shy 5th grader. He's treated like a rock star when he practices stacking. Lately he has not been so shy. We're waiting to see what happens when he breaks the world record of 2.72 seconds!"
