Jamie Beck, "Excellent Opportunity"... Not only are my students working on the various skills learned from stacking, so are others outside of my Special Education program. Stacking has grown in popularity in our school. Our current school record in the 3-6-3 is 4.90 seconds set by an extremely shy 5th grader. He's treated like a rock star when he practices stacking. Lately he has not been so shy... [January 2006] |

Walker, "Twelve
Cups" Three years ago, I was introduced to a student who introduced me to a unique hobby that has forever changed my life and study hall forever. One day, during the ninety minute block of boredom, otherwise referred to as study hall, a usually quiet sophomore pulled a stack of cups out of her backpack and began to stack them. Within seconds she had the attention of the entire room... [August 2005] |

Brye, "They
all did it!" I teach two classes of intensive reading. These classes contain students who are struggling readers. As one would expect, it is hard to get them to read and complete work. There are often many rounds of whining and attempts to avoid reading work. Well, that has changed. With the promise of time to stack, all of the students in one class completed their work and did a great job. In the other class, all but one completed their work and that one did more work than he has ever done. Who would have guessed that stacking would motivate a child to read and do work? [March 2005] |
